Please find below details of events that are happening during National Apprenticeship week 11th-15th March 2013.
These events have been jointly organised by the National Apprenticeship Scheme (NAS) and Swindon JC.
Monday 11th March 2013 -
Awareness of Apprenticeships 18-24yr 2nd floor
National Apprenticeship's (NAS), Swindon College and New College will have stands on the floor and be available to talk to customers / parents about Apprenticeships (facts & myths!).  No appointment necessary just refer to stand.
Tuesday 12th March 2013  -
CV Clinic  (If on job seekers allowance please submit to SPS 59690) , 1st floor Employer Suite.
Customers and young people will be able to receive 1-2-1 support from employers / providers looking at their CV and improving it where necessary. You can book an appointment by ringing Fiona on 01793 489759 or customers can drop in on the day between 10am-2pm. NAS will be on 2nd floor 18-24 yr promoting this and apprenticeships.
Wednesday 13th March 2013 -
Apprenticeship Jobsfair (If on job seekers allowance please submit to SPS 59691), 1st floor Employer Suite.
Training Providers and Employers will be available to discuss new apprenticeship opportunities they have available.  Customers will need to be booked onto a session, call Fiona 01793 489759
Thursday 14th March 2013 -
Brunel Plaza Jobsfair from 9.30am-4.30pm, we will be having a stand at the event together with other providers and employers who are currently recruiting.  (Witton Recruitment, Select Appointments, Liga UK and Total Swindon)
Friday 15th March 2013 - 
Swindon College will be on 2nd floor and available to talk to customers about Apprenticeships.  No appointment necessary.

CLOSING DATE POSTPONED UNTIL TUESDAY 5th- Football opportunity to Zambia with Swindon Town Football Club. Swindon youths only

Closing date is 5th March and so far there has been little response so late applications may be considered.

Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust is looking for 2 young people to accompany them on their annual trip to support sports development in Livingstone, Zambia.  There will be 10 people going altogether made up of volunteers and community sports coaches.

The trip is all expenses paid, departs on 24th May 2013, returning on 4th June

Applicants must

·         Be aged 16-24

·         Not engaged in Education, Employment or Training.

·         Have an interest in football

·         be willing to undertake some voluntary work with the club and some preparation before the trip

·         have or be able to get a passport

·         be prepared to get the relevant vaccinations

Applications must be made on the attached form and can be posted to Clive Maguire Football in the Community Development Manager at Swindon Town Football Club or emailed to clive@stfc-fitc.co.uk   There is no formal closing date but Clive is keen to start interviewing as soon as possible - there is much to do before departure.

The club understand the impact that this could have on benefit entitlement and are prepared to consider reimbursing JSA for the period customers are abroad.  This will very much depend on individual circumstances though.   It is also very important to stress the activity that must be undertaken prior to departure as this will include volunteering over the Easter Holidays to ensure that candidates can coach and support players (all training and preparation will be provided)

Needless to say that this could be a trip of a life time for two lucky young people.

An opportunity has been brought to my attention for any 16 to 25 year old's that are unemployed , not in training or education.
It's free in case you are wondering what the cost is :)

It's called 'Kick Start' and it is a short training programme (5 days)
linked to some interesting volunteering opportunities to help people
get a start in trying to get back to college,  finding a job or just
getting out of the house and doing something.


Their next course is running in Swindon on the 24th, 25th of April
and 1st and 2nd of May.

More about Kick Start

Kick Start is a 12 week stepped programme to support young people who are currently unemployed and not in education or training.  It is voluntary and FREE to take part in and once you have completed Step One you can progress through the rest of the programme at your own pace and even decide to end your involvement at any point.

Once registered on the programme you will be able to take part in the following activities:

Step One "Entry":  You will attend a local venue for three days of personal goal setting, developing job seeking skills and developing your confidence in the job market.  You will also be able to complete an introduction to volunteering award which can lead on to you becoming a fully qualified event steward. This step is usually completed over three consecutive days.

Step Two "Development":  You will be able to choose from a range of supported volunteering opportunities which will include both small-scale, local activities through to volunteering at large national events including festivals and events such as the Badminton Horse Trials and the Royal Bath and West Show.  Volunteering placements may be for just one day or could become a long term commitment - it will be entirely up to you to decide how much time you want to put in.

Step Three "Progression":  Return to the training venue for some specific support with CVs, job applications and communication skills and maybe even some fun and games.

Step Four "Completion":  Tie everything together, complete your event stewarding award and (hopefully) progress in to paid employment or register for another college programme or training course.

Step Five "Celebration": At the end of every twelve week programme there will be a celebration event where Kick Start graduates from across the South West can come together to share their experiences, make new friends and have fun. These days might be based around activities such as rock climbing, swimming or karting, or could be more of a party with food and live music. It really will be up to those completing the programme to decide.

Step Six "Assist": We are always looking for people to help run future activities both as a part of Kick Start and also as a part of our other projects.  Once you have completed steps one to five you may be able to come back as a volunteer to help run future training sessions, volunteering days and even celebration events.

#itsyourfuture -Opportunities for 17-24 year olds in Swindon with learning difficulties/disabilities, who are not in education, employment or training, and are looking for work

#itsyourfuture is a new programme commissioned by Swindon Borough Council called ‘#itsyourfuture’ which is being provided by North Wessex Training.  It is for 17 and 18 year olds, and 19 – 24 year olds with learning difficulties/disabilities, who are not in education, employment or training, and are looking for work. #itsyourfuture aims to help young people gain the skills necessary to enter the world of work, help young people gain work experience, and support them in the training and/or work they enter. Louise Wright will be running a programme of group and individual activities for each young person that will include supporting them in their job searches, helping with CV writing, application forms, and interview skills, plus helping them develop their personal and social skills.  She will also be trying to help the young people overcome barriers to learning; supporting them in areas such as housing, health and accessing other services, e.g. children centres, The Platform etc.She will be working with the young people, SBC and various companies to help them find work experience or work placements, and she will provide regular support for the young people by meetings, email, phone and text.
