On to bigger and better things

Danielle Brown: “onto bigger and better things”

The founder of The Youth Life Project, Danielle Brown has told FLIC Wiltshire that she is moving the project onto bigger and better things.
Danielle said: “Now that The Youth Life Project (TYLP) has had its first successful family fundraiser and have managed to raise some awareness about TYLP, it’s time to move on to bigger and better things.”

“Our next event is going to be held in June and will be specifically for 10-19 year olds. It will be a celebration, bringing people together to form our official group.”
“We’re going to get DJ’s, musicians, street artists and sports personalities involved as well as put on fashion shows, workshops, and various other things including skateboarding, biking and other great activities.”
“TYLP claim to be a unique charity that is current and cool and we’re forever proving that with things such as our blog, but it’s now time to go one step further and really prove to everyone that we are everything we claim to be.”
“I want as many people from Swindon as possible involved. If you have a talent then share it with the youth, if you have ideas then put them forward and we will create something great with them. We need to show the younger generation that us elders are thinking about them and are going out of our way to make a change.”

So the question is.. Are you in?

2012 The Year Swindon Gets A Proper Skatepark.

There have been so many occasions where I have heard people say things like "the youth of today wouldn't misbehave or hang around in big groups outside shops if they had somewhere to go". This is a statement that I myself, and I'm sure many others agree with, in the sense that if there were exciting places to hang out, exhilarating things to do, then maybe our youth would be a whole lot happier. I mean, we all tend to do random things when we are faced with utter boredom. So lets change that. Let's give young people more things to do. Lets create places where they actually would enjoy being. Let's create activities that they would actually like to take part in.

Which links me nicely to this..

Kieth Leahy, a man behind SNAPS (Swindon Needs A Proper Skatepark) is campaigning for a 'free to ride concrete paradise' in Swindon town.
The idea is to create a themed park based on the railways. Real rails for grinding, a platform, sleepers and so on. A really industrial but beautiful place to ride.

Imagine..
An exciting place where young people can go to express their culture, be themselves, socialise, and develop/learn skating skills.
obviously this isn't going to solve every problem facing the youth, but it's definitely a great start! It's ideas like this that keep our communities thriving. When a group of people decide to make a change, and bring a positive new project to their home town. This is definitely one of those life changing projects, that will see a lot of youths much happier. This project has even been backed by superstar DJ Fatboy Slim when he performed at the Oasis in December last year.

The estimated cost to build something as amazing as this will cost around £300k (depending on the final plans). Due to the current economic climate SNAPS cannot rely on donations from local sources such as Swindon Borough Council, so are aiming to raise 50k themselves as well as applying for lottery grants and corporate sponsorship.

They have already held a successful fundraiser, and are now promoting the next exciting event which will take place in August. See picture below for event details.

The Youth Life Project develop interactive youth club

The Youth Life Project develop interactive youth club

| 15/03/2012 | 0 Comments

‘THE YOUTHY’

With cuts forcing the closure of many youth clubs across the country, voluntary organisation, The Young Life Project (TYLP) has announced plans that an interactive online based youth club will be launched in the spring.
With a launch date expected to be announced in early April, TYLP intend to make the most of the growing trend in interactive web-based services with the groundbreaking website aimed at 10-19 year olds – ‘The Youthy’.

‘restore the faith lost in young people’

The Youth Life Project aims to restore the faith lost in young people and equip them with the skills required to make positive life choices. Providing a service for young people in the region aged 10-19 to utilise, The Youth Life Project is born from the passion of its founder Danielle Brown for the care and well-being of young people.

‘Aiming to raise £2,000′

Since the foundation of TYLP, the momentum of support has been gathering pace as the organisation seeks to become an established charity in Swindon and the wider West Country. Aiming to raise £2,000 to get ‘The Youthy’ live, TYLP will be holding its first fundraising event in the spring.
“TYLP has grown from a seed in my mind and the feedback and support received has been so fruitful that we are looking to engage the youth sooner than had originally been anticipated” said TYLP founder Danielle Brown. “The operating costs to run a youth club are extremely high and even with the support gained so far this is currently an unsustainable venture.”
“Knowing some people may be reserved or shy about discussing things close to their heart, we are launching ‘The Youthy’ website to engage with the youth who have become more accustomed to being online than meeting like minded peers in youth clubs. Face to face contact in a youth club would be our preferred medium, but with the development and prevalence of internet based tools it would be silly to over look a medium which the youth are already comfortable with.”

Slang for youth club, ‘The Youthy’ is already a familiar term amongst the youth and has been adopted by TYLP as part of its branding.

“We hope the website is a hit amongst its target audience and reinforcing a sense of familiarity will be crucial to making the project a success in its early days.

TYLP's First Fund-Raiser

The Youth Life Project fundraising event in May

| 19/03/2012 | 0 Comments
Following the launch of The Youth Life Project in October 2011, the newly registered charity has announced the first in a series of fundraising events taking place in Swindon over the spring.

In a bid to raise £2,000 for the charity, the fundraiser marks the first landmark event since the formation of The Youth Life Project (TYLP).

The Youth Life Project aims to restore the faith lost in young people and equip them with the skills required to make positive life choices. Providing a service for young people in the region aged 10-19 to utilise, The Youth Life Project is born from the passion of its founder Danielle Brown for the care and well-being of young people.

‘will be held at The Running Horse’

The event taking place on Monday 7th May will be held at The Running Horse Pub located on Wootton Bassett Road, Swindon. Aiming to raise money and awareness for The Youth Life Project, the charity is urging the local community to come down on the day and enjoy the festivities.

‘first fundraising event’

“I am delighted to be announcing the first fundraising event for The Youth Life Project” said TYLP founder Danielle Brown.

‘dream come true and a very exciting time’

“This is a personal dream come true and a very exciting time for TYLP. With the ongoing support from The Running Horse pub and The Carney Charles Foundation this event has come to fruition and we welcome everybody in the area to come along and get involved with the activities we have planned for a fun-filled day.
“With a range of activities available for guests to participate in, we really do have something suitable for every age group. There will be various workshops including, beauty, street art and music, as well as a host of fun activities ranging from a bouncy castle, hair braiding, henna and face painting to Zumba dance and a BBQ serving the best in traditional British and West Indian cuisine, not forgetting a raffle with some lovely prizes to be won and even a rubber duck race. This event promises to be a great day out for the whole family and one which, we hope, will attract a lot of visitors.

“We have a number of taster events in the works and expect to be announcing a date for The Youth Life Project’s official launch party shortly, which will be held late summer 2012. TYLP has come a long way since our formation and we plan on being around to help the youth come rain, sleet or snow but let’s hope for some sun first,” concluded Danielle.
